- Impact on Youth – Social media offers educational and career opportunities but also contributes to mental health issues, sleep deprivation, and reduced human interaction.
- Influence on Society – It shapes narratives, exposes injustices, and challenges traditional media but also promotes unrealistic standards and consumerism.
- AI and Creativity – Over-reliance on AI tools like ChatGPT may hinder creativity and intellectual growth, raising concerns about human decision-making and productivity.
Technology nowadays has become an essential component of our everyday lives. It plays a pivotal role in fulfilling certain tasks and responsibilities in all spheres of life. It is generally believed that the onset of social media has influenced the youth to a large extent. The subsequent paragraphs explore the overall impact of social media on youngsters. Despite the myriad benefits, the widespread use of social networking sites has led to the deterioration of youth.
To begin with, the immense popularity of social media has opened up doors to innumerable educational and career opportunities transcending borders, regardless of field. For instance, during the COVID era, when everything around the globe came to a standstill, the internet in general and social media in particular played a paramount role in enabling people to carry out their important tasks. Classes/business meetings were carried out online. Likewise, during winters, the smog-hit areas in Pakistan often declare the closure of daily activities, and this is where social media comes in handy. Consequently, the world as a global village proved to be true.
Pursuing this further, it can be stated that social media has become an absolute necessity for every aspect of life. Media is empowered to build a narrative among the masses via its content. Today’s social media is within the grasp of every citizen, enabling it to pose a challenge to the dominance of traditional media and to keep an eye on every happening, which means celebrities and government officials are under constant fire from the troll brigade. Unlike the mainstream media, where the flow of information can be controlled and constantly monitored, the awareness and exposure brought among the masses is unprecedented. Illegitimate acts carried out by individuals, groups, institutions, or states are easily brought to light by the use of social media. That is the main reason that oppressive regimes such as those in occupied Kashmir and North Korea tend to restrict internet availability in their respective territories to keep the youth under a shadow.
On the contrary, it is considered that rampant usage of social media has adverse effects on adolescents. Increased consumption of social networking sites leads to higher levels of dopamine constantly invading immature minds. Thus, they are triggered by a slight reservation, and their frustration becomes quite evident, such as seen at the traffic signals or while in a queue. The issue of sleep deprivation is another illustration in this regard. Human-to-human interaction has significantly decreased among the young population, and they prefer to stay indoors or online. Hence the quality of life has dropped down.
Moreover, the picture portrayed on the internet is a far cry from reality. This culminates in other youngsters indulging in unnecessary comparisons with what they see repeatedly on their screens. For example, trends such as perfect facial harmony or glass skin can lead to increased complexity and low self-esteem. In certain cases, teens committed suicide after unhindered exposure to Instagram. Another detrimental repercussion that stems from this is consumerism. Youth are constantly driven by material desires at the cost of their emotional, mental, and physical well-being. The increased popularity of Facebook ads and products going viral on TikTok and causing horrendous damage are a couple of examples.
These seemed quite improbable a couple of decades ago, but mankind has achieved this pedestal of progress at a high cost. Consequently, the bond with nature has been cut off. The increased dependence on social media has made humans isolated and deeply involved in the virtual world. The youngsters are experiencing anxiety as they seek validation from others in this race towards modernization.
Additionally, the skyrocketing popularity and widespread use of assistant tools like ChatGPT by students or those engaged in any sector of life would hamper individual creativity and might lead the youth to a state of intellectual paralysis. The man was awarded the highest place among all creations on account of his wisdom and thought process. All of it seems to be in jeopardy as we are willingly stepping down to give in to technology. Undoubtedly, such tools have proven to be equipped with massive potential, but the ultimate power of decision-making lies with the human mind, and it must be preserved. Stagnant minds cannot stay productive, and it is a threat that hovers over mankind.
After careful consideration of both sides, it can be asserted that social media has showered the new generation with innumerable advantages, yet it has to be admitted that it can devour if left unattended. If the crisis persists, it will have a detrimental impact on existing and future generations. It is the era of the social media boom, and it is upon us to maintain the fragile balance with its use in our lives. It should be incorporated to facilitate the activities or tasks assigned, but at no point should one allow it to dictate our lives.
