CRUSHED DREAMS: THE STORY OF SARAH’S DEFIANCE

Could the world ever be this strange? With people who go on with their daily lives, not having enough time to think about how they spend their lives, doing what they were told to do or what was expected of them, not knowing whether they truly want it or not. Then exist those who are cursed to see through the evils of the world, are constantly struggling to protect themselves from becoming like other around them: mere automatons.

Sarah  was always an obedient young girl who made sure everyone was pleased with her. She feared standing out and was highly agreeable. But as soon as she stepped into her teenage, she was no more an obedient person. She had realized that it was better to please herself than to please others, by then she had learnt to stand up for herslef.

Sarah went from a coward who would bow down to societal and cultural norms to someone who was daring enough to defy the norms, break the cage and set herself free. She pitied those who held the norms in higher virtue, and worshipped their oppressors though it harmed them yet they were cowards who thought it was better to let go of their dreams and become part of the herd in order to remain safe. Since, challenging social hierarchies and cultural norms required courage and posed serious dangers.

Unlike others, Sarah was adamant to live life on her own terms and was reluctant to give up on her dreams. She faced the wrath of those who gave up on their dreams because seeing Sarah struggle for her dreams made them insecure about themselves. So they thought it was better to keep her caged as they were.

And the only way to keep her from escaping the norms was to get her married as she would be busy procreating and won’t have enough time for her dreams. So, she was wedded off to a man twice her age. He was a highly controlling person, who couldn’t tolerate Sarah’s independent spirit and dreams. So, to make her obey him, he used to beat her every other day, but still he couldn’t crush her spirit. And when she tried to escape, he killed her. Sarah was like a bird who was born in a cage and dreamt of flying in the sky, and that was her only sin that cost her her life.

Thus, was crushed a person who had dreams of freedom in her eyes and hopes of independence. Hence, crushing the heads of those who were yet to even raise them. Making sure, that  no one would dare to choose individualistic standards for themselves and try to defy norms, even though the norms harm their freedoms, proving that the norms are more worthy than the life of an individual.
