He was a big proponent of the sanctity of the written word and its power to improve the human condition. Reminiscent of this quote from Oscar Wilde, one of his favorite authors: “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars”. For him erudition was essential to climb out of the gutter and reach for the stars. Friends and acquaintances always referred to him as a gentleman and a scholar.
