I whisper

I whisper
to you so that
the wind won’t carry
my voice to the heavens.

“immortalise
the brown of my eyes
so that i may live
as long as this earth
and breathe
as it breathes.”

you ask me how.
my voice cracks
because i know God
and He hears me regardless.

“in the stones
that will be buried in the earth
and one day turned into magma
so when the ground erupts
i’ll see the sky one last time.”

the sky rumbles
and the ground shakes
as do our bones.
and I am reminded what we are
finite.
