Pakistan: The State of Anarchy
In recent years, Pakistan has been grappling with serious concerns that have plunged the entire system into chaos. Heightened external and internal security threats, a lack of balanced political legitimacy, looming economic crises, discord among state institutions, and widespread social disillusionment are clear signs of the authorities’ faltering role.
The recent incident in Bahalwalnagar, where a group of army personnel raided a local police station and detained police officials, highlights the deep mistrust between key state entities. Although senior officials have purportedly resolved the confusion, videos and images circulating regarding the incident suggest that control is slipping.
Furthermore, the populace faces multifaceted threats in today’s society due to the lack of conviction in policy-making. Robberies, street crimes, and other social offenses are rampant, with criminals openly brandishing automatic weapons without fear of law enforcement. Cities like Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Lahore, once peaceful, now find themselves at the mercy of offenders. It appears that the police have neglected their duties, turning a blind eye to criminals and even offering them protection, while disproportionately using force against innocent civilians, especially women. This disengagement stems from a lack of clear direction from higher-ups, with personnel receiving conflicting orders, leading to systemic anarchy.
Moreover, ongoing market inflation can be attributed to an ineffective administrative system. Transporters, shop owners, farmers, and other service providers are arbitrarily setting prices, as local administrations, tasked with overseeing the market, have shirked their responsibilities. Instead of focusing on maintaining public order, they have become preoccupied with arresting political activists and leaders under the Maintenance of Public Order ordinance, leaving the public to bear the consequences. These unfortunate realities paint a bleak picture of Pakistan’s state of affairs, with the chaotic situation breeding unrest in society.
