In the midst of escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi wrapped up his three-day official trip to Pakistan on Wednesday, April 24th. During his visit, President Raisi engaged in several discussions with key Pakistani figures, including the Prime Minister, President, Army Chief, and the Chief Ministers of Punjab and Sindh, aiming to strengthen economic and strategic cooperation between the two neighbouring nations. Despite the signing of eight Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs), both sides emphasized the need to surge bilateral trade up to $10 billion within the next five years. This diplomatic exchange illustrates the mutual commitment to deepening ties and fostering stability in the region amidst broader geopolitical challenges.

Despite the enthusiasm from both Tehran and Islamabad regarding the outcomes of the meeting, the actual situation presents a grim reality where the agreements reached may remain merely theoretical without tangible results. President Raisi acknowledged international concerns surrounding the bilateral engagements, ensued by American reservations. The United States warned against engaging in economic deals with Tehran due to ongoing economic sanctions related to Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Furthermore, as Pakistan contemplates another IMF deal to support its fragile economy, it faces the dilemma of risking improved trade with Iran against the Western wishes.

This visit also carries potential repercussions for Pakistan’s foreign policy. Raisi’s presence in Islamabad amidst international allegations of Iran being a threat to global peace, especially following recent tensions with Israel, implicitly suggests, Pakistan and Iran are in the same boat. Pakistan having active foreign policy, she needs to be cautious, avoiding to bring herself into the spotlight. However, by involving itself in the current crisis, Pakistan inadvertently provides an opportunity for the Western media to promulgate a negative propaganda against her. This situation entails, the need for Pakistan to navigate international relations rationally, balancing its interests with regional and global dynamics while avoiding unnecessary controversies.
