‘The charms of artificial intelligence’ is a catchphrase of the 21st century. Technology has brought humans from the Stone Age to the agricultural age and then to the industrial age. From here, the path to the intelligence age is being paved, as stated by the CEO of OpenAI. AI is the lived reality of this intelligence age at present.
From supporting the solving of riddles to outperforming humans in every sector, AI has come a long way in the blink of an eye. It has eased human life in every aspect, thus reflecting the dawn of the intelligence age. With its most advantageous side evident to everyone, its perilous posture can’t be ignored.
The most notable threat regarding AI is that it has begun to outperform humans in more and more skills. It has started replacing humans even in tasks that demand intuition, thus surpassing natural intelligence. This hazardous feature is aptly pointed out by Yuval Noah Harari in his book 21 Lessons for the 21st Century. Thus, it is a stark reminder for humans that a shaky future lies ahead.
Not only is skill acquisition at risk, but the creative faculty of humans is also hijacked by algorithms. Overreliance on automated information and responses is leading to both physical and cognitive stagnation. For this very reason, 70 % of the content on social media is generated with the help of GenAI. This hinders the human ability to think critically, analyse, or interpret in various situations, ultimately leading to the death of creativity in the contemporary period.
In a similar vein, the present generation is marred by the hazardous impacts of AI‑powered misinformation. AI creates content to satisfy the needs and demands of its users, abandoning the principle of accuracy. The Global Risk Report 2024 reveals that AI‑powered misinformation is regarded as the topmost threat in the global risk landscape. Such revelations highlight the perilous nature and scope of artificial intelligence in the world.
Nor is it limited to these issues; ethical concerns and privacy dilemmas are also striking realities associated with AI. AI is accused of breaching ethical norms, leaking personalised information, perpetuating gender issues, and then using them against humans, topping the list of concerns in cybersecurity. This makes algorithms a super‑power reigning over the human world.
Moreover, AI‑powered, modern, biased warfare is another grim reality. It operates on biased tools, spreading information and providing data that support particular agendas. We need to understand that it is not merely mimicking voices or writing poems; according to research, it is now reportedly being deployed to support regimes committing atrocities. Hence, it is a reminder to humans to sense the signal before it slips out of their hands.
Correspondingly, it is also suspected that AI will wipe jobs out worldwide. However, some analysts refute this claim, arguing that it will create more jobs requiring human intellect and the capability to handle various situations—much better than AI‑led ones.
In conclusion, AI is on the brink of transcending its bounds and proving fatal for humans. From being a human‑friendly generative tool to outpacing various jobs and manipulating discourses, it holds the power to influence and control nearly every scheme. Thus, it is now the task of humans to shoulder the responsibility of using it wisely when choosing their daily course of action.
